Rubio and Jaishankar push for early India-US trade deal in Mumbai

business-standard.com —

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said India and the US are close to finalising a bilateral trade agreement during his Mumbai visit on Tuesday, urging India to expand fuel purchases from the US and Venezuela. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar hosted talks covering trade, defence, technology and energy security. Rubio described the strategic alignment between the countries as "extraordinary" and said only a small number of issues remain unresolved in the proposed free trade agreement. He called India a refining superpower and discussed increased Indian purchases of American oil and Venezuelan crude processed at Reliance Industries' Jamnagar refinery. Rubio laid a wreath at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel to honour victims of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, which killed 166 people including six Americans. He is scheduled to meet business leaders Gautam Adani and N Chandrasekaran before touring the Jamnagar refinery, on his second India visit in five months.
