Slovakia refuses to join new EU loan for Ukraine

rfi.fr (Ukrainian) —

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced Slovakia will not join a new 70 billion euro EU loan for Ukraine, requested for 2027. This decision was supported by Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated the war will cost Ukraine 155 billion euros in 2027 and urged the EU to find financial support options. The EU has already pledged a 90 billion euro loan for 2026-2027, with funds tied to rule of law and anti-corruption compliance. Fico warned against linking Ukraine financing to EU budget negotiations for 2028-2034, saying agreement by year-end will be difficult. He expressed preference for supporting Ukraine through education, infrastructure, and energy projects instead.
