EU moves to fast-track satellite project to rival SpaceX
The European Union will submit documents in the coming days to launch Project Bromo, a satellite initiative designed to compete with SpaceX and reduce Europe's dependence on Elon Musk's company, according to Bloomberg. The project aims to create a company that helps Europe lessen reliance on American satellite service providers. It will be among the first to test the EU's updated merger approach, which favors creating regional giants to compete with US and Chinese rivals. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has praised the project, though competition commissioner Teresa Ribera warned it won't receive regulatory leniency. The initiative follows recent disruptions to Starlink services for Ukraine's defense forces, with reports indicating a White House order restricted satellite communications, though the source of the request remains unknown.
