US midterms: Historic wins for Black, Native American, and LGBTQ candidates
Voters elected the first Black female governor, first Native American female governor, first Native woman senator, and first openly gay male US senator in Tuesday's midterm elections, marking historic leadership firsts across the country. Most of these winners are Democrats, including Deb Haaland in New Mexico, Keisha Lance Bottoms in Georgia, Peggy Flanagan in Minnesota, and Chris Pappas in New Hampshire. Republicans also broke ground, with Byron Donalds elected Florida's first Black governor. A first Muslim US senator remains possible in Michigan. Advocates celebrated the expanded electorate, noting years of organizing by people of color and LGBTQ communities. The midterm also set records for women candidates, with nearly 300 running for Congress and several states electing their first female governors.
