Abdul El-Sayed's Wife Sarah Jukaku: Indian Roots in Bhatkal, Karnataka
Democrat Abdul El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan's US Senate race on Wednesday, becoming the first Muslim elected to the US Senate. His victory has drawn attention to his wife Sarah Jukaku's Indian heritage, with her family roots tracing to Bhatkal in Karnataka. Sarah Jukaku was born in Michigan to Indian immigrant parents. Her father, Dr Tayeb Jukaku, is a nephrologist from Bhatkal, and her grandfather, J.H. Shamsuddin Jukaku, served as deputy finance minister in the erstwhile Mysore State government. Sarah holds degrees from the University of Michigan, Oxford, and Columbia, and runs a psychiatry practice in Ann Arbor. The couple met at the University of Michigan's Muslim Students' Association and married in May 2006. They have two daughters. El-Sayed has said his marriage has brought him closer to his wife's Indian heritage, noting he is "well inducted" into South Indian family life.
