Abdul El-Sayed Wins Michigan Senate Race, Becomes First Muslim US Senator
Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has won Michigan's Senate race, becoming the first Muslim elected to the US Senate. He defeated Republican Mike Rogers in a key swing state, marking a breakthrough victory for the Democratic Party's left wing. El-Sayed, the son of Egyptian immigrants and a former public health official, ran a grassroots campaign focused on universal health care and removing outside money from politics. He overcame a last-minute endorsement of Rogers by primary rival Haley Stevens and massive outside spending. The victory bolsters the progressive movement ahead of the 2028 presidential election. Republicans, including President Donald Trump, had branded El-Sayed a terrorist during the campaign. He becomes the first Democratic doctor in the Senate since 1969.
