Michigan voters elect Abdul El-Sayed as first Muslim senator
Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan's Senate race, becoming the first Muslim senator, and said voters rejected a "hateful, spiteful campaign" after Republican attacks on his identity. His victory gave Democrats a substantial Senate majority in Tuesday's midterms. El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers by 7 percentage points with nearly all votes counted, and every Michigan county shifted toward Democrats compared with 2024. President Donald Trump had repeatedly called him a "jihadist," and Rogers conceded Wednesday without the two having spoken. El-Sayed, whose parents immigrated from Egypt, rose from a double-digit gubernatorial defeat eight years ago to win the primary despite being outspent. He called for new Democratic leadership in Congress but did not commit to supporting Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer.
