Ukraine's steel industry halts as Russian strikes and Black Sea blockade bite
Ukraine's metallurgical industry is on the brink of collapse due to intensified Russian strikes and Black Sea logistics blockades, with major producers halting steel output. On September 25, ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine's largest steelmaker, said it cannot resume production after missile attacks. Since August, plants have faced at least nine ballistic missile strikes, causing nearly $100 million in damage, according to industry officials. Metallurgy contributed about 7% of Ukraine's GDP last year. Three top companies—Metinvest, Interpipe, and ArcelorMittal—have suspended steel production. Land transport costs 50-60% more than sea routes, while EU trade rules and carbon requirements add further pressure.
