Ukraine's largest steel plant halts after Russian strikes

Ukraine's largest steel plant, ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, has halted operations following four Russian missile strikes in five weeks, with the company citing an inability to safely resume production. The attacks killed five people and wounded 17 workers, one critically, with the latest strike occurring on September 21. ArcelorMittal has informed the Ukrainian government it will focus on preserving infrastructure for potential post-war recovery, and expects to report about $1 billion in non-cash losses from asset impairment. The company has invested over $700 million to sustain operations since the full-scale war began. Other Ukrainian steelmakers, including Zaporizhstal and Kametstal, have also stopped due to recent strikes, with national steel output falling 57.3% in August alone.
