At a joint press conference after their private Manhattan meeting, Trump said the left-wing Democratic mayor had "potential" to be a "great mayor." Mamdani called the conversation "productive," noting they agreed to establish a new dialogue level between teams regarding affordable housing construction in Queens. Mamdani, New York's first Muslim mayor, said he raised the plight of thousands of Haitian New Yorkers facing deportation after their temporary protected status was revoked in July. The two previously met at the White House in November 2025 after Trump had called him a "little communist" during the campaign.
