Mamdani and Trump discuss affordable housing and Haitian migrants in New York meeting
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and President Donald Trump met Monday in New York, discussing affordable housing and the immigration status of Haitians in the city. The socialist Democrat invited Trump to Gracie Mansion ahead of the UN General Assembly, where both leaders appeared cordial. They discussed a deal for roughly 12,000 housing units at Sunnyside Yard in Queens, focusing on federal financing and technical approvals, with Trump emphasizing affordability for low- and moderate-income residents. Mamdani said he shared "strong opinions" on keeping immigrants safe, highlighting Haitians affected by Washington's cancellation of Temporary Protected Status. Trump responded he has "strong opinions about taking care of people." The hour-long meeting included White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and mayoral advisor Elle Bisgaard-Church, but not Stephen Miller.
