Russian diesel shipment heads to US after Putin-Trump deal, data shows
A Malta-flagged tanker carrying 40,000 metric tons of Russian diesel is heading to New York following an agreement between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to LSEG data on Friday. The vessel Agioi Fanendes loaded ultra-low sulphur diesel at the Russian Baltic port of Primorsk on October 22 and is expected to arrive in the US on November 7. Trump has waived parts of sanctions law against Russia and threatened a US diesel export ban to Europe to lower prices before the November 3 mid-term elections. Russia agreed to lift its self-imposed diesel export ban after the Putin-Trump deal, with 300,000 tons to be exported immediately, followed by 500,000 tons in November and 1 million tons thereafter. Since the EU embargo in February 2023, Russia has mainly exported diesel to Brazil, Turkey, and African countries.
