Putin calls Musk a genius as Russia launches rival satellite internet
Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Elon Musk as a "real genius" on Wednesday, acknowledging Russia is only beginning to roll out its own satellite internet system to rival Musk's Starlink. Putin made the remark during a presentation by Digital Development Minister Maksut Shadayev, who said Russia had launched over 30 satellites for its Starlink equivalent. Putin noted Musk operates more than 5,000 low-orbit satellites, while Russia takes its first independent steps, adding Moscow is in contact with American partners, including Musk, to maintain orbital discipline. Starlink has been used by Ukraine's military for drone operations and battlefield communications throughout the war with Russia. Ukraine recently complained of speed restrictions that hampered operations, though services were restored over the weekend, with Musk accusing Ukrainian forces of violating SpaceX's terms.
