The condition affects 1 to 2 out of 1,000 women after delivery. Bridget María Chesterton, 52, was hospitalized twice after giving birth in 2019, experiencing delusions and disorientation. She recovered with antipsychotic medication and family support, including her husband, mother, and a postpartum doula. Doctors say family vigilance and quick action are crucial for treatment. Chesterton wants to dispel misconceptions about the disorder, which can cause hallucinations and paranoia, and notes most mothers with it do not harm their children. She is publishing a poem about her experience this fall.
