Mississippi and Alaska Senate races remain tight as Democrats lead
Two crucial Senate races in Mississippi and Alaska remain undecided days after Election Day, with Democrats narrowly leading Republican incumbents in both contests. Democrat Scott Colom leads Cindy Hyde-Smith in Mississippi, while Democrat Mary Peltola is ahead of Dan Sullivan in Alaska, though thousands of ballots remain uncounted. In Mississippi, Colom leads by nearly 2,500 votes with about 30,000 ballots outstanding, including disputed provisional ballots that have sparked legal challenges. In Alaska, Peltola's lead stands at 637 votes, with ranked-choice tabulation scheduled for November 18, potentially influenced by two minor candidates. Democrats have already secured Senate control, but these races could expand their majority. Colom could become Mississippi's first Black senator since Reconstruction, while Peltola could be the first Alaska Native elected to the Senate. Mississippi counties must certify results by November 13.
