Mississippi and Alaska Senate races remain too close to call
Two Senate races in Mississippi and Alaska remain too close to call days after the 2026 midterms, with Democrats leading in both states that President Donald Trump won by double digits in 2024. The outcomes could further expand Democrats' congressional majorities. In Alaska, Democrat Mary Peltola leads Republican Dan Sullivan by over 600 votes with thousands of ballots uncounted. In Mississippi, Democrat Scott Colom leads Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith by nearly 2,500 votes, with about 30,000 votes outstanding. Mississippi counties have up to 10 days to report certified results. Both campaigns are preparing for a lengthy process. Hyde-Smith's team is monitoring remaining ballots, while Colom says he has lawyers ready to protect the vote. Mississippi's decentralized counting system means official results may not be available until late next week.
