Measles outbreak kills over 1,000 children in Bangladesh

Measles has killed more than 1,000 children in Bangladesh since March, with health officials acknowledging that gaps in a vaccination drive worsened the outbreak, the country's deadliest in decades. The South Asian nation of 170 million has recorded 1,002 deaths and 187,484 infections among children, according to the Directorate General of Health Services. Officials say around four million children missed inoculations, preventing herd immunity despite vaccinating over 18 million. The crisis is straining hospitals already overwhelmed by a dengue surge, with 130 dengue deaths reported this year. Officials warn dengue cases may spike further in late September, prompting a nationwide anti-dengue campaign starting Saturday.
