Bangladesh measles outbreak kills nearly 1,000 as vaccination gaps fuel spread

Bangladesh is battling a major measles outbreak that has sickened more than 166,000 people and been linked to nearly 1,000 deaths this year, with children accounting for an overwhelming share of cases. The crisis stems from vaccination gaps that accumulated over several years, beginning with Covid-19 disruptions and worsening due to vaccine shortages and missed catch-up campaigns. WHO and UNICEF estimates show second-dose coverage fell to 86% last year, down from 93% in 2024, leaving many children unprotected. An emergency vaccination drive launched in April has administered over 19.7 million doses, exceeding its target, and cases have begun to stabilise. However, experts warn Bangladesh's long-term challenge is preventing immunity gaps from rebuilding.
