Macron hosts Canada's Carney in France's last North American territory

Macron wrote on X that "our friendship is a force" in a world in crisis. The meeting occurs as both nations face strained relations with Washington, with Macron arguing Donald Trump's second term strengthens the case for European sovereignty, particularly on security. Carney is embroiled in a dispute with Trump, who has threatened to annex Canada, and welcomed EU plans to make Canada a "associate member." The three-day visit to the archipelago of under 6,000 residents, located 25 kilometers from Newfoundland, is the first by a French head of state in over a decade. The territory is a remnant of France's former vast North American holdings, and Ottawa has firmly rejected Trump's repeated annexation threats.
