Macron stated both nations are "two great independent countries that want to remain so," while Carney called for "collective resilience" and deeper ties between Canada, France, and the European Union. They specifically discussed Canadian liquefied natural gas projects as important for Europe amid rising fuel prices. Carney expanded sovereignty to include secure access to artificial intelligence, space, semiconductors, critical minerals, and clean energy. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has proposed making Canada the EU's first "associate member," a move Carney welcomed as a "new alliance."
