Israeli president to name government formation candidate on Sunday

estadao.com.br (Portuguese) —

Israeli President Isaac Herzog announced he will name on Sunday the candidate tasked with forming a new government, after opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot secured broad parliamentary backing to replace Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Eisenkot received support from the Unified List, Israel's main Arab party, and the Raam party, strengthening his position against Netanyahu. The United Torah Judaism party, a Netanyahu ally for three decades, abstained amid disputes over military service for religious students, reducing Netanyahu's declared support to 46 lawmakers versus 67 for Eisenkot. Herzog has until November 11 to choose between Netanyahu and Eisenkot, with the selected candidate getting 28 days to form a government. However, some anti-Netanyahu bloc leaders oppose alliances with Arab parties, and Netanyahu has alleged electoral fraud by these parties, which election authorities have denied.
