Chinese automakers unveiled EV batteries that can charge from 10% to 70% in as little as 4.5 minutes, far outpacing U.S. fast-charging times of roughly 20 minutes. Geely Auto announced the technology on Wednesday, joining BYD and CATL in a race to eliminate range anxiety. BYD launched a battery in March charging 10% to 70% in 5 minutes, while CATL's April technology reached 10% to 80% in 3 minutes and 44 seconds. Analysts noted challenges remain, including battery overheating risks and China's charging network, where most public stations operate below 1 megawatt. The ultrafast charging push stems from intense competition among over 100 domestic Chinese car brands amid falling domestic sales. BYD plans 90,000 superfast stations by 2028. U.S. firms are not attempting to match China's "megawatt race," instead pursuing more moderate charging upgrades.
