Chinese automakers lead EV fast-charging race with 5-minute batteries

Chinese automakers unveiled EV batteries that can charge from 10% to 70% in as little as 4.5 minutes, far outpacing U.S. models that take about 20 minutes. Geely Auto announced the technology Wednesday, joining BYD and CATL in the ultrafast charging race. BYD launched a battery in March charging 10% to 70% in 5 minutes, while CATL rolled out tech in April reaching 10% to 80% in 3 minutes 44 seconds. Analysts say the goal is eliminating range anxiety, though challenges remain around battery overheating, degradation, and charging infrastructure that mostly operates below 1 megawatt. China's domestic market faces intense competition with over 100 car brands, pushing firms to differentiate through technology. BYD plans 90,000 superfast charging stations by 2028, while U.S. networks remain "well behind" China's speeds, though experts say America may pursue a more moderate upgrade path.
