Chinese automakers lead EV fast-charging race with 5-minute technology

Chinese automaker Geely unveiled ultrafast EV charging technology on Wednesday that can recharge a battery from 10% to 70% in 4.5 minutes, joining BYD and CATL in achieving roughly five-minute charging speeds. Geely's system charges from 10% to 97% in 8 minutes and 40 seconds, while BYD and CATL launched similar technologies earlier this year. Analysts note U.S. fast-charging typically takes about 20 minutes, highlighting China's lead in the sector. Experts caution that battery durability and charging infrastructure remain challenges, as most Chinese public stations operate below 1 megawatt. BYD plans 90,000 superfast stations by 2028, while the U.S. pursues more moderate charging upgrades.
