U.S. Communities Block $200 Billion in Data Center Projects This Year

Nearly $200 billion worth of U.S. data center projects were blocked or delayed in the first half of 2026 due to growing community opposition, according to Data Center Watch. Between April and June, 45 projects worth nearly $68 billion were disrupted, adding to 75 projects valued at roughly $130 billion halted in the first quarter. Tech giants like Amazon, Microsoft, Meta, and Google plan to spend at least $700 billion this year on AI infrastructure, but residents cite concerns over water, power, and community strain. A March Gallup poll found 70% of Americans oppose local AI data centers, and over 300 state-level bills were introduced in early 2026. New York imposed a statewide moratorium in July, while Texas ordered an audit of grid connections, though President Trump has criticized restrictions as benefiting China.
