Trump asks advisers if Hegseth should stay after midterm losses
President Trump is asking advisers whether Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth should remain in his job following Republicans' significant losses in Tuesday's midterm elections, multiple sources familiar with the matter told CBS News. Some White House aides predict blame for the GOP defeat will fall on Adm. Brad Cooper, head of U.S. Central Command, and Gen. Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, for their roles in Iran war guidance. However, sources said Trump hasn't decided to replace Hegseth, though Democrats' strong majorities could increase impeachment efforts against him. Vice President JD Vance blamed the war for the losses, saying "The reason we lost is the war" on X. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is being floated as a possible replacement, potentially taking the post after his term ends Jan. 5. White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly said Trump "has full confidence in Secretary Hegseth."
