Stations without anomalies formed a "core" showing approximately 34 percent support for United Russia, while anomalous stations created a "comet tail" pattern. Journalists assumed votes for all parties except United Russia were counted correctly, then compared ratios in "honest core" stations. Moscow was excluded due to remote voting discrepancies, and several regions suspected of mass vote manipulation were also omitted. The method primarily detects statistical signs of ballot box stuffing, according to the publication.
