Meta to invest at least $135 billion in AI infrastructure
Meta plans to invest at least 135 billion dollars in artificial intelligence infrastructure, funded partly by a new non-voting share class that preserves CEO Mark Zuckerberg's control. The Facebook parent company exceeded analyst expectations with over 64 billion dollars in quarterly revenue. The announced 135 to 145 billion dollar investment will primarily expand data centers, though profits were reduced by an initial payment from a 17 billion dollar settlement with US states over youth protection and addictive app design claims, without admitting wrongdoing. Starting next year, the new share class will raise capital without diluting Zuckerberg's voting majority. Meta's AI agent "Muse," launched only in North America, has about ten million users but remains unprofitable, as the company still earns most revenue from advertising on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
