Japanese government bond yields hit one-month lows as investors seek safe-haven assets
Japanese government bond yields fell to more-than-one-month lows on Thursday as investors sought safe-haven assets amid a global equity selloff and hotter-than-expected US inflation data. The benchmark 10-year JGB yield dropped 6.5 basis points to 2.93%, its lowest since September 10. The move followed US consumer price data exceeding expectations, raising concerns the Federal Reserve could tighten policy more aggressively. The 30-year JGB yield slipped below 4% for the first time since September 10, while technology stocks fell on renewed worries about AI-related investments. US Treasury yields initially rose but reversed course, with the 10-year yield falling nearly 9 basis points to 5.1%. Investors largely shrugged off Bank of Japan board member Junko Koeda's remarks on avoiding excessive caution over rate hikes.
