Anthropic launches Opus 5.5: cheaper, faster, and beats Fable on key tests

Anthropic released its new Opus 5.5 model on Tuesday, setting a new state-of-the-art in coding and knowledge work while also being cheaper than its predecessor, with output token prices dropping from $25 to $20 per million tokens. The model outperforms the larger Fable model on many benchmarks and completed informal tasks Fable failed, with Anthropic calling it their strongest model tested to date. It also runs faster and communicates with less jargon, placing important information first. The release follows Opus 5 by two months, with Sonnet 5.5 and Haiku 5.5 expected soon. Due to capabilities comparable to Mythos in biology and cybersecurity, it faces the same safeguards as Fable, and comes amid CEO Dario Amodei's push to pace frontier development.
