PHP patches two critical flaws after possible attack
PHP released patches for two critical vulnerabilities on October 21, following a possible attack reported by Axios that caused temporary website outages. The flaws, rated 9.2 on the CVSS v4.0 scale, could allow remote code execution. The vulnerabilities, CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, involve memory corruption and stale global state, potentially enabling unauthenticated remote code execution. Wiz demonstrated exploits against WordPress, Drupal, and Joomla containers, with impact extending to PHP versions back to 5.4. The investigation combined human work with AI tools, including OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol, while PHP maintainers led fixes. Patched versions 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36, and 8.2.35 were released, with updating being the only complete fix.
