Japan Firms Compensate Customers After Cyberattacks on Trading Platforms
GMO Internet is compensating customers for losses from unauthorized access after an attack on its foreign exchange trading platform, and is paying each client 5,000 yen (28.5 euros) as a goodwill gesture, according to CEO Masatoshi Kumagai. The company's shares fell 11 percent in Tokyo on Monday following a ransom demand from a suspected attacker threatening to leak corporate and customer data. GMO refused to pay, is cooperating with police, and has requested Japanese government cyber defense measures. Other Japanese firms are also affected, with Park24 compensating customers after a data leak. Experts say AI is making cybercrime faster and cheaper, prompting Japan to create an AI team to simulate attacks and identify system vulnerabilities.
