GMO pledges full compensation after cyberattack as ransom deadline looms
GMO Internet Group announced it will fully compensate victims of unauthorized access to its cloud services, with one victim reporting losses of 6 million yen from fraudulent FX trades. The company faces a ransom demand of $1 million, with a deadline of noon on October 27. The attackers allegedly stole login credentials and executed automated currency trades within seconds, generating fees that depleted accounts. GMO confirmed 26,739 servers may have been affected, and victims remain anxious despite the compensation pledge, noting that leaked files cannot be recovered. The attackers threatened to release personal data, including browser histories and contacts, if the ransom is not paid. GMO stated it will not comply, and revealed the initial demand was $50 million, later reduced to $1 million.
