Carney and Macron to meet as Canada-EU ties deepen

Prime Minister Mark Carney will meet French President Emmanuel Macron on Sept. 20 to deepen Canada-EU ties in energy, defence, and technology, as relations with the U.S. worsen amid the trade war. The meeting, announced by the Prime Minister's Office, will occur in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, a French territory off Newfoundland. Discussions will cover aerospace, critical minerals, and advanced tech like quantum and satellites. Carney's European trip also includes addressing the European Parliament and meeting UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham. The EU ambassador confirmed a unique partnership is being crafted, distinct from arrangements with other nations. Finnish President Alexander Stubb has voiced support, suggesting Canada could be the EU's 28th state. No deal is expected this week, but an announcement may come at a late-October summit.
