Canada Proposes EU Associate Membership

The EU and Canada plan to announce a strategic alliance on trade, defense, and technology on September 16, targeting joint resistance to US and Chinese pressure. Carney has held closed-door talks with leaders of France, Italy, Germany, and Nordic nations to integrate Canada into the EU's $21 trillion single market, covering defense industry, energy, AI, and critical minerals. Discussions also include undersea cables, data centers, satellite networks, and redirecting Canadian gas exports to Europe bypassing the US. However, integration faces hurdles: Canada would likely need to contribute to the EU budget, cede some sovereignty, and adopt EU regulations.
