Zelensky rejects unfreezing Russian assets in Europe
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky opposed unfreezing Russian assets held in Europe, stating that Russia should receive nothing to fund further killings while the war continues. He made the remarks after a meeting with Belgium's King Philippe in Brussels. Zelensky's statement followed a Financial Times report that the US proposed unfreezing part of Russian assets and transferring them to a Washington-controlled financial instrument, discussed as part of efforts to resume peace talks. He also prioritized strengthening air defense, including F-16 supplies from Belgium. Of the 260 billion euros in frozen Russian assets, 190 billion are held in Belgium. The statement comes amid renewed Ukraine-US tensions, with over 100 MEPs having urged the EU Council and Commission in September to unblock discussions on using these assets for Ukraine's aid.
