UK airports hit by air traffic control failure, disrupting flights

A technical problem at UK air traffic control provider Nats is causing major flight disruptions at airports across England and Ireland, including Heathrow and Gatwick, with departures heavily delayed or cancelled. Heathrow paused departures around lunchtime before facing further afternoon disruption, with very few flights taking off. British Airways cancelled short-haul services to prioritise long-haul flights, while Gatwick and Easyjet warned of cancellations. Landings are also restricted, affecting inbound flights. Nats said engineers are investigating the flight processing system issue and working to resume normal operations. Passengers are advised to check flight status with airlines, and Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander acknowledged the frustration caused.
