Resident Evil Sets Franchise Box Office Records With $108 Million Global Opening

Zach Cregger's "Resident Evil" set franchise box office records, earning $60 million domestically and $108.3 million worldwide in its opening weekend. The film's domestic debut easily topped the box office and shattered the previous franchise opening record of $26 million set by 2010's "Resident Evil: Afterlife." Internationally, it added $43.3 million, pushing its worldwide total past the global finals of both 2002's "Resident Evil" ($102.9 million) and "Welcome to Raccoon City" ($41.9 million). The movie still trails "Resident Evil: The Final Chapter" ($312 million, 2016) as the franchise's highest grosser. Elsewhere, "Practical Magic 2" dropped 59 percent to $12.1 million, while "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," "The Odyssey," and "Coyote vs. Acme" rounded out the top five.
