Sony's zombie horror "Resident Evil" earned $26.3 million domestically on its opening day Friday, making it the No. 1 new release and on track for a $55 million weekend debut, the largest in franchise history. Directed by Zach Cregger and starring Austin Abrams, the reboot is based on Capcom's video games and follows a medical courier during a zombie outbreak. It surpassed the previous franchise record of $26 million set by 2010's "Resident Evil: Afterlife." "Practical Magic 2" took second place Friday with $3.1 million, while "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" and "The Odyssey" remained in the top five. Newcomer "The Weight" and "Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom" also opened Friday.
