Madrid rejects urgent proposal to rehouse evicted 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal

A property company has made an urgent proposal to Madrid's city council to allow 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal to return to the apartment she was evicted from, but the municipal authority rejected it for failing to meet legal requirements. Urbagestión, which owns the apartment, proposed placing the property in the municipal Reviva program to provide Abascal with stable, affordable housing. The company denied raising her rent from 500 to 1,650 euros and claimed the property is not for sale, while expressing regret over her situation. The city's housing company said the proposal did not comply with program rules but offered mediation, telecare, and free alternative accommodation. Abascal was evicted after the property changed hands in 2018, with courts ruling in favor of the company's rent increase.
