Madrid eviction of 87-year-old sparks police probe and return offer

The property fund Urbagestión has proposed to Madrid's city council that 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal be allowed to return to her home, days after her eviction sparked widespread outrage. The Spanish government has also ordered an investigation into police conduct during the operation. Urbagestión, owner of the building, said it seeks coordination with municipal authorities to provide Abascal with a "stable and affordable residential alternative" through a city program. The company has offered cooperation with Madrid's housing agency and social services, though the Tenants' Union says it has received no information about the proposal. Abascal, speaking from hospital, said she fought to inspire others despite losing her home, and urged support for a Saturday protest in Puerta del Sol. Over 200 police officers participated in the eviction, with 209 sanction reports filed but no arrests.
