Jose Altuve reaches 2,500 hits with Houston Astros; 3,000 next?

Jose Altuve recorded his 2,500th career major-league hit during the Houston Astros' game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday, becoming just the second active MLB player to reach the milestone. The 36-year-old second baseman achieved the mark in his 2,094th regular-season game, joining Craig Biggio as the only players to total 2,500 hits with the Astros. Altuve, who is signed through 2029, began the season at 2,388 hits and needs to average 153 hits over the final four seasons of his contract to reach 3,000. He entered Tuesday with 111 hits in 117 games this season, though his .247 batting average would be a career low for a full season. Only 33 players in MLB history have reached 3,000 hits, with Miguel Cabrera the most recent in 2022. Altuve, who idolized Cabrera growing up in Maracay, Venezuela, recorded at least 200 hits in four straight seasons from 2014-17 but has been hampered by injuries in recent years. He and Biggio are among just 12 players in MLB history with at least 2,500 hits, 250 home runs and 300 stolen bases.
