How to protect your bank account from fraud: 1.8 million Italians targeted

A recent fraud case against Fideuram, involving a fake WhatsApp message and AI-cloned voices, has highlighted growing threats to bank accounts, with approximately 95 million euros stolen and 36 million still unrecovered. Over 1.8 million Italians have faced current account fraud or attempts in the last year, causing over 1.1 billion euros in damages, with fake emails and SMS being the most common channels, alongside messaging apps and AI voice cloning. Younger adults aged 25-44 are frequent targets, and nearly one-third of victims do not report fraud. Experts advise ignoring phishing requests, enabling account notifications, verifying identities via official numbers, using secure networks, and being wary of fake payment schemes.
