AI-cloned CEO voice tricked Italian bank out of 95 million euros

sudinfo.be (French) —

A fraud orchestrated with artificial intelligence siphoned 95 million euros from Italian bank Intesa Sanpaolo in February, with 36 million euros still missing. The bank recovered over half the stolen funds. A Fideuram manager received a fake WhatsApp message from the CEO, followed by calls using AI-cloned voices and fraudulent emails. Most money went to accounts in China and Hong Kong. Over 40 million euros were frozen and returned by a Chinese bank, while Italian and Portuguese authorities seized 13 million more. The remaining funds were likely converted into cryptocurrencies.
