FDA investigates salmonella outbreak tied to broccoli sprouts in four states

The FDA announced Wednesday it is investigating a multistate salmonella outbreak linked to recalled broccoli sprouts, with 22 cases reported across four states and two hospitalizations. No deaths have been reported. The CDC and state partners identified cases in Washington, Montana, Idaho, and Utah, with Washington having the highest number. Evergreen Fresh Sprouts issued a recall for its broccoli sprouts in plastic packaging, and the CDC advised against eating products with specific expiration dates in September. Whole genome sequencing confirmed the outbreak strain. This investigation is separate from other ongoing sprout-related E. coli and salmonella outbreaks and a cyclospora outbreak. Illnesses were reported between July 6 and Aug. 26, with 89 percent of interviewed patients having consumed broccoli sprouts.
