Dow rises 1% on strong earnings and lower oil prices
U.S. stocks closed higher Tuesday as stronger corporate earnings and falling oil prices lifted the Dow Jones Industrial Average, while concerns over artificial intelligence spending pressured technology shares. The Dow rose 1.05%, or 548 points, to 52,513.98, the S&P 500 gained 0.31% to 7,714.52, and the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.03% to 26,421.84. Investors rotated into healthcare, defensive, and value-oriented stocks, with healthcare leading gains among the S&P 500's 11 major sectors. Eli Lilly, UnitedHealth, Merck, Johnson & Johnson, and Amgen contributed to the broader market, while 3M jumped over 5% after beating expectations and expanding its datacenter partnership with Amazon. Oil retreated from five-month highs to around $103 per barrel for West Texas Intermediate, easing market pressure. Technology shares lagged as doubts persisted about AI infrastructure returns, with South Korea's Elice Group plunging over 30% on its debut. Meta, Netflix, and Alphabet were among the weakest performers, while investors monitored Middle East tensions and upcoming earnings reports for signals on capital expenditure plans.
