China's CCTV drops Real Madrid match after Mbappé's Mao comments
China's public television did not broadcast Real Madrid's match against Racing Santander after suspending La Liga coverage following Kylian Mbappé's comments about Mao Zedong. The game was also absent from the Migu streaming service despite the player's apology and several sponsors severing ties. The match, scheduled for 16:15 in France, was not shown on either CCTV sports channel, with no 11th-round games aired since the controversy emerged. La Liga noted the broadcaster had previously shown all matches live, while other fixtures like Barcelona's were available on Migu. The dispute began with a video of Mbappé discussing a meme associating him with a "Chinese dictator" using Mao's image. Three Chinese companies ended contracts Tuesday, and state media group CMG suspended La Liga broadcasts, with Mbappé apologizing and Beijing acknowledging his remarks.
