Brazilian Chamber leaders push electoral reform and digital ad rules to counter PL gains
Brazilian Chamber President Hugo Motta has coordinated with centrist party leaders to push an electoral reform through Congress this year, responding to the PL party's recent gains. The proposal includes mixed district voting and new digital platform advertising rules. The plan, discussed Wednesday with União Brasil, PP, PSD, and Podemos, would implement mixed district voting by 2034 with a transition starting in 2030. It targets Chamber, state assembly, and city council elections, excluding presidential, gubernatorial, Senate, and mayoral races. The reform requires a constitutional amendment, with centrão leaders aiming to vote before new lawmakers take office in 2027. Motta also advocates for digital advertising rules ensuring equal candidate competition, though PT and other parties remain resistant to the district model.
