Bats' longevity genes offer clues for human health
A new study in Nature reveals that bats' longevity and viral tolerance are genetically linked, suggesting the same biological mechanisms protect them from both infections and age-related decline, offering potential insights for human health. Researchers, led by Juan Manuel Vazquez at UC Berkeley, created high-quality genetic maps for eight bat species, focusing on the Myotis genus, where Brandt's bat can live up to 42 years. They found long-lived bats evolved enhanced abilities to eliminate damaged cells and suppress harmful inflammation, preventing cancer. Unlike most mammals that fight viruses by eliminating pathogens, bats developed high viral tolerance, allowing viruses to persist without causing illness. This evolutionary strategy may guide new approaches to boosting human immune systems against cancer and aging-related diseases.
