The study, led by Juan Manuel Vazquez at UC Berkeley, examined 32 bat species, focusing on the Myotis genus, where Brandt's bat lives up to 42 years. Bats use viral tolerance, suppressing inflammation to carry viruses, and have evolved extra immune gene copies like PKR. Long-lived bats clear damaged cells to prevent cancer, and their immune systems avoid decline with age. Vazquez says this suggests human diseases of ageing and infection may be tackled through shared biological pathways, potentially improving immunity against tumors and stress.
